Try-Outs - A Joke or Necessary Evil

Published on Thu 05/28/2009 | 11 total comments

Well, I took my daughter to a try-out this past week and, a luck would have it, she was in great form. However, it was hard to se who she was playing against. She dribbled by most players and outran the others. It almost seemed to me like the core players from the team were not at the try-out. Just the new blood. Needless to say, we got a call that evening and a request for our credit card number to secure a spot for our daughter on the team. Does this mean she is any good? Does it mean she will fit in the team? Does it mean the team needs the revenue from the slot? All of the above? What it really means is that we were too late to evaluate the club and make a good decision. Try-outs in this neck of the woods are little more than a formality for coaches and DOCs to get a last look at players that they haven't had time to scout. It is also a time for players who are unhappy to try and quickly find a club that looks and feels like it would be worth a one year trial. Take a tip from the ZenMaster, interview parents on the club and also interview parents who have left that club. In the future, go to scout out the clubs you are considering moving to well before the try-out dates to see what it may be like. Test the commute, test the players, and the player-coach relationship. It is really worth the time. These actions will help you get more information than you would ever get in a try-out. See also my article on this subject in the articles section of the sie. What say you?

Sorry for the spelling gang, but some say that the way the brain works, people remember phrases that the brain repairs better than the mistake free sentances. Anyway, what say you? Now you will ask, does he misspell words intentioanlly. The answer is no! I just happen to be good at it!

I'm not a big fan of tryouts or the way the whole traveling soccer process works. Having adequate knowledge prior to putting money down is important to me. Unfortunately, information about clubs and specific teams is hard to come by. It would be nice if there could be a website that contains all local club information that is accurate. I agree with the Zen Master about interviewing parents, scouting out the teams of interest, and checking out the commute. The beef I have is that many clubs ask your son or daughter to tryout and make a commitment without knowing who else is on the team and more importantly, who the coach will be. How can anyone make this decision and feel comfortable? If you are a parent trying to make a decision about joining a club -- don't be bashful! I realize information gathering is time consuming, but IMHO it is worth it. Also, don't put too much emphasis on what division the team is playing at.

The one problem with finding out who is on the team is that you may not really know. Sort of the chicken/egg question. Some families will move is player A makes the team, some will leave if player B moves, but if you make an decision earlier than others you may get burned.

Soccerdad, you are correct. I guess there really isn't a solution. Wouldn't it be nice if local kids played on local clubs with the exception of a few highly gifted players playing on the elite teams? I guess it is kind of a unrealistic dream because of the number of clubs that cover the same basic areas.

Hey guys...good thread here. I like the idea of a community team with players getting an exceotion to play elsewhere at elite levels. I like the rivalries that emerge from this and I like the consistency that it brings. The odd thing about the club soccer is that it competes on so many levels when there are multiple teams per town. We compete for fields, refs, coaches, players, trainers and so on!!

Hello .....everyone!....what your saying makes perfect sense...but in reality, i know i don't have time to do all the research you just described...and i don't even have a 9-5 job as most people. I remember as a soccer player who was kinda established already .....really didn't have to appear for tryouts....cause we had no doubt whether i would make the team...(but i still went, i wasn't "stuck on myself"...haha)..and it was like who else is out there good enough to fill our empty spots......and we just hoped for the best when it came down to whether we would fit in......In a way, i wish we did do more research on the coaches etc ....cuz that last team is what killed it for our family.....(u already heard the story).......I MISS TALKING ON HERE! :)

Hey Linda; I hear you!! I'll bet you were and awesome player!! This year we were very surprised with the number of players who came to the try outs at Zen!! I can't believe that so many kids wanted to see what was happening inside THE BIG ORANGE TENT!! - We will be up to 14 teams and just 2 or 3 years ago we only had 3 players. I love this game!!
