ZenFooty Blog Archive - March Can Music Make Your Soccer Better!! Published on Sun 03/29/2009 | 18 total comments ZenMaster says YES!! Soccer is all about rhythm. This relates to individual rhythm and team rhythm. From an individual standpoint, players who enjoy the music through listening, singing or playing an instrument can feel the game the way they feel the music. They can recognize patterns, move their body to fit the pattern, and dance around an opponent. Music is all about recognition, interpretation, and improvisation. Soccer players interpret the rules, situations, and coaching instructions all the time. And the very best players improvise in real time based on the situation at hand. There is no question at all that the greatest dribblers are constantly improvising just as the greatest Jazz musicians do!! From a team or group standpoint, playing in the clarinet or saxophone section of a band or singing in the alto section of a chorus aligns extremely well with the group rhythm required for a closely knit team (or group within a team such as defenders or midfielders). So if you are ever considering a musical instrument or chorus for your child, I would highly recommend it because it is truly helpful for a modern day player. What say you?? Are you and your child into the music and rhythm of soccer? And yes, the ZenMaster has done his fair share of squeaking on the sax!! Just ask some of the old timers!! « comments » 3v3 Tournament Memorial Day Weekend Published on Fri 03/20/2009 | 13 total comments This blog is my annual challenge to all players (and parents) to come out and show your stuff at the ZenFooty 3v3 Community Cup on Memorial Day weekend. The tournament is at Ty Warner Park in Westmont Illinois. There will be tons of soccer, a Bar-B-Que, and a carnival for the kids. Check out ZenFooty.com for the details. U-8 through U-12 play on May 23rd and U-13 through adults play on May 24th. So why 3v3? This small sided format offers players more touches on the ball than any other tournament. It also demands that players constantly maintain good offensive field positioning and passing angles. Discipline in defense is required including proper pressure and cover. Without proper pressure, goals can be scored from distance (as there is no goalie). Without proper cover, good dribblers will snake through your team and score. 1-2 passing is in abundance and individual talent can easily be seen in this format. Though it is a shortened field, all players get a great workout because of the intensity of the game. Why don't you come on out and join us? Who are my 3v3 lovers out there and what say you about this type of tournament? « comments » Are We Shaping The Game of Soccer or the Business of Soccer Published on Sat 03/14/2009 | 6 total comments The more I work with the club environment, the more I see it. Directors, Parents, and Players are falling in love with process, structure, administration, goodie bags, t-shirts, profit-margins, hotels, airplane rides and trinkets. Give me a break folks. Get back to the game - how many times are you touching the ball? How many pick-ups or 3v3s did you play today (not this week, not this weekend, but TODAY)? Soccer is NOT a convenience! Soccer is an INCONVENIENCE BORN OF PASSION. If you are wrestling with the logistics of getting to training or a game you "just can't miss," then you get it. If you are trying to decide whether to go to training or to a party, this may not be the sport for you (at least not competitively). Soccer IS the party. If you are spending more time on the administration of soccer instead of the passionate enjoyment of the sport, you are more a lover of the process than the content. Frankly, the content is all there is. The process is just something we Americans wrap around everything to control it. Set soccer free and let it be what it can: A game for all hours of the day, for all shapes and sizes, for all talent levels, and abundantly available for those who want to become a pro (whether that means a pro player, a pro coach, a pro referee, or a pro spectator). When we bridle soccer by limiting games and chances to train or play so it can be "managed", we reduce what soccer can really become. Ask yourself this question: Am I tied up in the process of soccer or am I providing a rich environment for myself and my child that includes the developmental things such as: pick-up games, technical training, group training, 2v2v2, 3v3, free-play, futsal, small sided games, league play, tactical training, game prep, contests, blogs, and glossaries. What say you? Are you looking for control or are you looking for the passionate growth of the sport? « comments » |
